Eco-house, Ardfern

A 5 bedroom home cut into the banks of a small lochen on the Mull of Kintyre. The design was largely dictated by the planning requirement for the building to appear similar to the single-storey dwelling which had already been granted planning permission. The slope of the site meant that we could utilise an upside-down floor plan with the living spaces and master bedroom above and the remaining bedrooms below, whilst the living spaces were at the entrance level. Four bedrooms are on the lower floor with glazed doors opening out onto the shores of the loch. The living room is open to the underside of the rafters to maximise the volume of the space whilst the rest of the loft void is utilised for storage. A large glazed window extending into the apex gives views to the west with a wrap-around balcony giving extensive views in all directions.

The owner was keen to maximise the Eco-friendly credentials of the house and so utilised a combination of features chosen to be complimentary with an emphasis on efficiency and minimising energy input. The whole building is well insulated to minimise heat loss and an underfloor heating system utilising a water source heat pump taking heat from the nearby loch maximises the efficiency of the heating system.
