The small, characterful brewery buildings are located in the East end, just off Brick Lane and just a mile from St. Mary Axe in the City of London. It has already been converted into office space, but it was bought by a developer with the aim of significantly enhancing the quality of the buildings. A new wing was added to close off the courtyard, and a basement extension below this as well as a mezzanine in the main building maximise the floor area of the development.
The extension is clad in terracotta to be in keeping with the materials of the surrounding industrial buildings in terms of colour and texture.
The existing buildings are being fully refurbished with rationalisation of roofs to simplify the interiors, and the concrete tiles replaced with slate. New brickwork is in keeping with the existing buildings, and double glazed windows with black metal frames were sourced to match the existing single glazed windows. The external access gangways for the first floor were replaced and covered, and a lift was added to make all floors wheelchair accessible. Toilets were added into individual units so that they are no longer shared between the separate units. The insulation is upgraded to current standards and an efficient heating and cooling system has been integrated. Work is progressed on site in October 2016 and is due for completion in June 2018.
