The Grade 1 listed centrepiece of the Glasgow University campus designed by George Gilbert Scott has two stairs which give access to the examination and graduation halls. The south stair had been unsympathetically decorated with turquoise paint. We researched the designs for the original interiors work by the Architect, particularly the St. Pancras Hotel, London, and based the patterns and colours on original photos and pattern books.
We needed to design everything from a solid oak desk and benches, brass chandeliers, and wall and carpet patterns. Craftsmen with experience in restoring historic churches carried out the painting and fabrication of the furniture. The result is a stunning interior which is strongly based on how it would have originally looked.
